It is official

eLiberatica 2009

It is official, eLiberatica 2009, the 3rd edition will take place on 22-23 May, in Bucharest.

The most probable location is the University Politehnica of Bucharest.

The main focus of this edition will be “Open Source and Free Software in an Economic Downturn”. We strongly believe that FLOSS is the most appropriate solution these days when everybody is struggling with economic and financial issues.

Some insight – first hand ;) news:

  • Richard Stallman will send a video message for Romanians; we invited him, he wished to come but his schedule is overlapping with other events he is already committed, so we hope to have him in person next year. Anyway, his video message will spoke to FLOSS supporters as he would be there.
  • We will have again guest form European Union like last year.
  • We are discussing with Romanian official representatives  and we hope to have at least 2 ministers participating this year. We think is the time for Romanian Government to really take in consideration Open Source and Free Software. Now, in the last hour.
  • The conference will take place on a single track  – plenary speeches in the morning; high profile international speakers will present on this single track.
  • In the afternoon we will go on multiple tracks, at least 3; we will have this time lots of workshops and practical presentation.
  • A new thing this year – eLiberatica will host individual events inside the conference. Almost sure we will have an Open Agile event and we are discussing right now with other organizations which are considering this kind of participation.

I’m personally working like crazy in my spare time to setup the new website, which will have improved functionality and communication tools. Also I have on roll lots of dialogs with high profile IT and FLOSS personalities, but also with young and committed FLOSS and IT specialists.

We wish this year to reach a critical mass of 500 attendees, and to have an event that will overwhelm the latest two. And we are going to do it, we know how now, we have support, we have you, the community on our side and we will not disappoint any of you.

Ah, and a last thing, but probably one of the most important – we wish to come with a very low ticket price so will be affordable to every each Romanian who wish to learn new ways and stay in touch with the times.

There is an ongoing growing community around eLiberatica, so we started the eLiberatica Community Discussion List. The enrollment is free to anybody wishing to help, collaborate or only keep in touch with the events.
The single thing that is mandatory is to write a few words about yourself, and to use your real name there. Yes, we think that single way to communicate honest is to not hide under a nickname ;) We re open and free, remember.
To become a member, sent an introductory email with your full name, why you wish to subscribe and a few details about you on this email address – eliberatica@googlegroups.com

OK, enough words. Stay tuned, and more – become committed in this unique and historical Romanian IT event. There are not many things like this happening in Romania.

Come at eLiberatica and you will see what I mean.

Lowering the ticket price would really be an useful thing, I remember last year when the local OpenOffice.org wanted to meet Louis Suarez-Potts (he was a speaker) but this was not possible: the price was to high so they couldn’t participate and someone from the organizers persuaded Louis to not participate in an out of the conference meeting.

Yes, the price will be low. Of course, this will cut some things like the meals, but I think is more important to lower the price than offering fancy meals.

Well, I think this year we went really low – 29 euro and 12 euro for students… only the collaterals and freedom party cost more than 12 euro.
